Colonial Beach Fall Festival, October 22, 2022

Hosted by Colonial Beach Chamber of Commerce

The Osprey Festival was on display at this fun event, introducing our new mascot, donated by a generous supporter of the festival!  Courtesy of our mascot, children were supplied with, what else of course, but Swedish Fish!  Later the festival participated in the Golf Cart Parade, we didn’t win but we had a great time.

Monarch Mania Festival, October 8, 2022

The Virginia Osprey Festival in Colonial Beach attended the Monarch Mania Festival on Cobb Island, Maryland on Saturday, October 8, 2022.  Approximately 70 Monarch Butterflies were tagged, recorded and released.  Young and old alike enjoyed participating in this amazing event.  Our own Mike Callahan was one of the organizers and supplied the butterflies for this event.  Our festival volunteers had free milkweed seeds to give to attendees and shared information about the osprey festival.  We thank the organizers for inviting us to attend this amazing event!

Our First Bird Banding, June 20, 2022

On June 20, 2022, Colonial Beach experienced its first bird banding.  This banding event was held in Torrey Smith Park and was named “Ospreys and Pastries”.  A small group of bird enthusiasts from Colonial Beach enjoyed coffee and pastries while awaiting the arrival of Todd Dalton, a member of the community and a supervisor for Dominion Energy.  They were also awaiting the arrival of Ken Smith, a licensed bird bander, driving in from Glenn Dale, MD.  Using the Dominion Bucket Truck, Todd brought down the two babies that were in the nest at Torrey Smith Park.

Ken banded each one and Todd took them back up to their nest.  Ken and Todd were also able to band two more at another nest on Irving Avenue for a total of four baby ospreys banded.  CB Greenspace was on hand to accept donations for an osprey nest cam for Colonial Beach.  What a fantastic day!  We are looking forward to next year.
